Early childhood care and development is crucial to creating social skills and a passion for academics that will follow children throughout their lives. At early childhood centers, young children learn how to interact with their peers through play, teamwork exercises, and group projects.

One of the most well-known centers in Houston is Halpin Early Childhood Center. This may be a  great place to send your child if you want them to have the best in Pre-K and kindergarten education with fantastic teachers in a caring environment.

Named after Sharon Goldstein Halpin, a dedicated teacher in HISD that also began as a student of that very same district, Mrs. Halpin taught elementary school at Burnet Elementary, then returned to the classroom after taking maternity leave at Travis Elementary, where she taught all the way through her cancer diagnosis.

She was then named Vanguard Coordinator for the school so she could continue to work with the kids, especially those gifted and selected for the Vanguard magnet program, even when she was unable to work every day due to her illness worsening. She made educating and reaching out to children her mission, and because of that, the Halpin Early Childhood Center was dedicated to her name in 1997.

Striving to live up to Mrs. Halpin’s memory by providing an exceptional education and learning environment for all of their students, the center recently rolled out an anti-bullying campaign for their young students,  everyone signed a pledge to not allow bullying, and not to be bullies themselves. Based on parent reviews from Trulia, Zillow, and GreatSchools.org, we’d say the center is quite successful in creating a happy, safe environment and so much more.

To ensure that every student has the opportunity to excel, Halpin has also begun focus on increasing their attendance levels, offering special incentives for perfect attendance for both teachers and students to keep everyone motivated to show up daily and work hard. There is also a new attendance data tracking team to help identify patterns in absenteeism and help determine how to go about fixing them.

Another way to keep families and the community involved in the school’s education system is their Shared Decision Making Committee, or SDMC, which is an open committee that holds public meetings.  They are involved in the decisions related to campus planning, school budgets, curriculum, and staff development plans.  The PTO is kept in the loop of SDMC on-goings, and are welcome to consult their representatives in the SDMC as their voice on school decisions.

In all, Halpin Early Childhood fosters education and stresses the importance of attendance in a warm, caring environment.  Staff members exemplify the spirit of Sharon Halpin in their work, and students are motivated by them to show up every day ready to learn.  If you are looking for exceptional early childhood education, Halpin is a go to choice in the Houston Independent School District.
