Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens

Getting to know a new city can be exhausting. There are so many nooks and crannies to discover that it can feel like you are an outsider looking in. But out of all the cities in the great state of Texas, a Houston relocation feels as smooth as can be. There is so much to do in this amazing city that you will never feel like you are out of the loop.

If a rich cultural experience is what you crave, then you can rest assured the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens will be your home away from home. The location itself feels warm and inviting because it was once home to Houston civic leader and philanthropist, Ima Hogg (1882–1975). The collection at Bayou Bend is one of the finest showcases of American furnishings, silver, ceramics and paintings in the world.

Today, more than 2,500 objects are on display, all of which were either made or used in the United States between 1620 and 1876. The house is situated on 14 acres of organically maintained gardens in Houston’s historic River Oaks neighborhood. And you can breathe easy knowing that Bayou Bend is the first historic public garden in Texas to practice organic gardening.

As a part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens is a popular attraction. The site is open year round for the thousands of visitors who take tours and enroll in special programs. The Lora Jean Kilroy Visitor and Education Center includes the Kitty King Powell Library and Study Center and the Shop at Bayou Bend, as well as state-of-the-art education and rental spaces. These are all available to the public and open for private events. You will certainly fall in love with this gem from the very moment you step foot on the grounds.

You will find yourself going back time and time again. With so many events and programs, there is always something new to enjoy. Free Family Days are an excellent way to pass the time on lazy Sundays. With music, games, crafts, and countless activities both you and the kids will be eager to make the trip to the bayou each week.
