For the diner who needs plenty of great choices on the menu at a low price, there is Hickory Hollow! Hickory Hollow is a wonderful barbecue and country comfort food restaurant that has 3 locations in the Houston area. While I’ve only visited the Heights location, I’ve heard plenty of great things from others who were equally in love with Hickory Hollow and their 2 other locations.
According to Yelp and word of mouth, this hot spot has earned its great reputation for having the best chicken fried steak in Houston, and I agree! It’s even been featured on The Food Network Channel, so it’s an attention grabber! The chicken fried steak comes in 3 sizes, all of which are hugely delicious! I highly suggest using the gravy they serve with the chicken fried steak. In my opinion, the gravy is what truly sets it a notch above chicken fried steaks you can find elsewhere.
Their barbecue, steaks, and other offerings are all truly excellent, as my family loves the large portions and tasty BBQ sauce. Plus, it’s a fun walk up to the counter to place an order. The experience of Mason Jars as drinking cups, crayons and coloring books for the kids, and live music on Saturday nights (at the Heights location, unconfirmed for other locations) is truly a real home country delight!

We went here several years ago and then again just a couple of weeks ago and let me tell ya this place hasn’t changed a bit. The food tastes the same and you can order a small, medium or large chicken fried steak depending on how hungry you are. We also tried the chicken fried chicken, that was good too! They have live music as well.
