As Bellaire expands from a Houston fringe community to a booming center of original businesses, Sustain Juicery is ahead of the game. This is nowhere near a Smoothie King-style beverage experience, as this newer, healthier cousin dominates with all kinds of original juice blends. There’s even a small but, delectable selection of smoothie options.
When I visited at around mid-morning, I trailed behind a caravan of four children chirping at mom for not just generic strawberry-banana juice (made-to-order with organic produce), but all variety of flavorful ingredients like ginger, cayenne, kale, asian pears, wheatgrass and chia seeds. Well… they didn’t chirp for chia seeds… But these kids knew just what they liked, selecting not just from the prescribed blends, but their own imaginations. A serving of kale the kids will actually eat? It doesn’t get much better than that! This mom seemed to have it all figured out.
After they filed out, the ambience was intimate. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros whistled charmingly over the speakers and the clean bar that looked out on the parking lot seemed like the right spot to open up a book and enjoy “anything you want” freshly blended right there for you.
I say it beats the heck out of an Odwalla from Starbucks. In fact, you can order the juices in bulk and they will put them in some very chic thin glass jars so you can take it with you to the gym or the grocery store, and refrigerate it safely for later. It’s also helpful if you’ve got your rewards stamp card! I know I do!
