Stone’s Throw: High Bar Standards at an Affordable Price

Less like a bar, more like a church for the refined drinker, Stone’s Throw is one of Houston’s best new bars. Owned by Sean Bermudez who partnered with Hunter Montgomery of Royal Oak fame, Stone’s Throw is shaping up to be one of Montrose’s upscale cocktail bars, elevating the playing field with other bars like Anvil and Hay Merchant (see our blog posts!).

Named for its proximity to other neighborhood bars in an area that’s turning out to be a lot like Washington Ave, the vaulted ceilings and architectural touches behind the bar give Stone’s Throw an altogether different feel than other bars on the Westheimer strip. With vestiges of a Gothic Cathedral and some industrial touches for style, you’d never expect that this gorgeous two-story house of worship for connoisseurs of drink was once a beauty supply store, according to Houston Eater.

After much DNA-altering surgery and delays, this Montrose real estate now feels like a 20’s speakeasy with dark tufted leather and low-lit chandeliers—a place where “hooch” is the password and you expect to see gangsters in pinstripes listening to fuzzy music on a gramophone. Fortunately, the tunes are more modern than Glenn Miller. I think I spent a quarter of the time I was there gasping “I love this song!” and then quietly wailing to Heart or Pat Benatar. At least, I thought I was quiet…

But don’t be fooled by its literally loft-y interior: Stone’s Throw has lots of drink specials that are sure to make you a regular. The cocktail menu was conceived by Royal Oak bartender Caleb Gutierrez and features house-made ginger beer. Their coppery taps concentrate on local and Texas craft beer.

The specials, however, are the real gems: Happy Hour daily reflects the hour (4-7, $4 at 4, $5 at 5… etc). Sundays feature champagne specials, Thursdays boast $6 martinis all night, and there are great bar snacks. The proximity to Boondocks and Bermudez’s other endeavors also turn the odds in favor of finding something delectable at one of his many food trucks. Definitely stop on by and learn why Stone’s Throw is a religious experience!
